"Three's A Crowd" Review

This weekend (Friday, Saturday January 23 and 24, 2009) the David Taylor Dance Company (DTDT), under the artistic direction of James Wallace, is presenting eight short dances at Hamden Hall in Englewood, Colorado in a concert titled “Three’s A Crowd.” Despite the terrible sight lines and minimal technical capabilities of that venue DTDT has made this concert work. All of the dancers are most capable, and the choreography is as varied as the four choreographers presented.

Jeoff Horgan’s “Aphrodite,” set on Jennifer Kuhn, is a lovely visualization of the Dvorak music score, and notable for the graceful use of Kuhn’s arms. An untitled work set by Wallace on Natalie Kitka, and Kevin Burke is much more ambitious, and uses Kitka’s considerable technique and marvelous sense of space and time well. Burke’s partnering in the adagio sections lacks fluidity, but Kitka coped well, and Burke more than made up for it in later works, which include more “kick-ass” forms he apparently loves. Amy Anderson’s “Dangerous Kitchen,” with Jackie McMenaman and Horgan is a comedic piece turned slapstick and results in sophomoric miming of the “lyrics” in a bad music choice. Jennifer Whiting’s “Drift Tone” is the most engaging work in the concert. Set on Kuhn and Kitka in two sections the work uses Sheila Chandra music dominated by rhythmic “nonsense” vocals that are first extremely articulated, and then spoken slower with overtones of music sounds. Of note is the dancers’ awareness of each other and unison sections bordering on perfect, even during the rapid articulation.

“The Spot That Brings Us back,” choreographed by Horgan on Kuhn and Burke is well performed, but the triteness of the same-old-same-old love dynamics taken from lyrics by “The Killers” severely shortens its performance life. Wallace’s “Concerto Armonico” uses Sarah Baker, Lindsay Parker and a Vivaldi score well, with Baker and Parker living up to the expectations any Vivaldi score establishes. Both dancers have a stunning presence, even when stock-still. David Taylor’s “Viborita” is a Tango based work that shows of Kuhn’s presence and abilities well, leaving Jeoff Horgan to cope as best he can. The concert closes with Wallace’s “Channeling Janis,” a work in three short sections of duets danced by Kitka, Parker, Burke, and McMenaman. The faster partnering in this work suited Burke well, and McMenaman is revealed as a most competent vamp.

“Three’s A Crowd” provides a delightful and understated evening of dance and DTDT is generously offering it for free.

Donald K.
